Jim Thorpe is a beautiful historical small town. We visited the town to find out the train schedules and take a short train trip for fun. The lady at the information center told us that there were no trains scheduled until Memorial day weekend of May. From what I understood, there are trains scheduled from Memorial day weekend of May till the Labor day weekend of September. She sounded that she may not be familiar of any schedules or information posted online though.. We thought we would just walk around the town. There were bikes for rental and a bus also available that departs at scheduled times to White water rafting which is already open for the season!
The town has tiny cottages with a historical look hosting bed and break. The mansion is open for tours and houses a museum as well. And, so is the jail. We took a walk through the town and it was splendid with cherry Blossoms lined all over the historic avenue. There were lot of shops lined up. The café we visited had yummy icecreams, hot chocolates in 5 different flavors, and boasts of a 250 below Hot chocolate which is a cold/frozen form of hot chocolate! I contended with a power bar of oats, coconut and cranberries shaped like a cookie.
Do not forget to bring a stroller for kids as it does involve some walking. There are also hiking trails close by that you could bike on, walk on foot or board the special train that stops at all hiking point stations… We decided to be back once again when the season is open with railway connectivity. Being part of Poconos, the weather was awesome with a slightly fogged look..
There is lot of place and benches infront of the rail station to sit and relax as you wait for the train with restrooms in the Information center. The ATM located in the railstation doesn’t work but there is a bank adjacent to the rail station with an ATM facility. There is parking available with 2 hour slot machines.
